How copper weight works

PCB copper thickness is specified in ounces per square foot (oz/ft²), a legacy unit from the plating industry. The number represents the thickness of copper if 1 oz of copper were rolled flat over exactly 1 ft² of area. The industry-standard conversion is 1 oz/ft² = 35 µm = 1.378 mil. Most standard 2-layer and 4-layer PCBs use 1 oz copper (35 µm) on outer layers and 0.5 oz (17.5 µm) on inner layers. Heavy copper boards (2-4 oz) are used for power distribution and high-current applications.
